Our dentist may recommend an oral biopsy to diagnose various conditions affecting your oral health, such as periodontal disease, oral cancer or other pathological conditions. An oral biopsy involves the removal of a small tissue sample from your mouth, which is then sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis. This sample helps in diagnosing issues like:
- Ulcers, sores or lesions on your gums
- White or red patches on your gums
- Persistent or chronic swelling of the gums
- Changes in your gums that may lead to loose teeth or dentures
Oral biopsies are often used alongside imaging technologies, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRI scans, to provide a comprehensive understanding of your condition.
During the biopsy procedure, our dentist will sterilize the area from which the sample will be taken and administer a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. For areas that are difficult to reach, a general anesthetic may be used to ensure you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the procedure.
After your biopsy, your mouth may remain numb for a few hours due to the anesthetic. Once the numbness wears off, you can return to your regular activities and resume a normal diet. The biopsy site may be sore for a few days, and we recommend avoiding brushing in that area until the soreness subsides. If you experience prolonged bleeding, swelling or soreness beyond a few days, please contact our office immediately.
The tissue sample collected will be analyzed in a lab. If a dental disease or other condition is diagnosed, Dr. Gregory Davis will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan to restore your oral health and wellbeing.
